Fairy Rings are found in woods and fields and appear as rings of dark grass or circle of mushrooms (or a combination of the two). The grass within the ring is usually a bright, shade of green.
A Fairy Ring is a place where fairies meet to dance. All fairies adore dancing, and they particularly enjoy leaping and bounding in circles. Legend says the rings themselves are created from the marks that fairies make on the grass during their circular dance.
In some parts of the country, stepping into a fairy ring will bring good luck, in others, it will bring misfortune.
Rings appear to have a link with Fairyland. A person who steps in a ring will suddenly be able to see the fairies dancing and hear their sweet music. This can be so entrancing that those who experience it lose all sense of time and will stay dancing with the fairies until they are pulled away.
In medieval times, dancing in a circle- caroling -was a common practice, even in church around the pillars. Dancing in a circle was seen as old- fashioned, then un- Christian or even sinister. It became associated with witches and fairies. And where better for fairies to be assumed to dance than in these mysterious rings?

Cosa sono i cerchi delle fate? Si tratta di un fenomeno naturale causato da una comunità di funghetti bianchi della specie “Marasmius Oreades”. Questi funghi crescono disponendosi in cerchio e allungando le ife (una specie di “radici”) in direzione del centro. L’effetto finale è la formazione di due anelli concentrici di colore verde scuro, separati da una striscia di erba secca, sotto la quale è presente una fitta rete di ife fungine, che raggiungono anche i 40 cm di profondità; sono quest'ultime la causa dell'erba morta, in quanto impediscono l'approvvigionamento di sostanze nutritive e acqua.
La scienza moderna ha dimostrato che spesso questi cerchi sono antichissimi e alcuni hanno più di 600 anni!
Secondo la tradizione si tratterebbe dei cerchi nei quali le fate e gli elfi si divertono a danzare per tutta la notte. È per questo che l’erba appare come “consumata”: per il lungo calpestìo dei piedini fatati! Occorre davvero molto tempo, secoli, perché un cerchio si formi nella radura di un bosco, ma nel Regno delle Fate il tempo trascorre in modo molto diverso di quanto accade da noi, perciò quella che per le Fate è stata una sola notte di danze sfrenate diventa un tempo lungo cent’anni ai nostri occhi!
