| Michaela :Why would you agree with what Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living". Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." Is he right? http://polls.linkedin.com/p/31453/cobpp Read more about what he said at http://www.philosophypages.com/hy/2d.htm. "Devotion to Truth" "Even after he has been convicted by the jury, Socrates declines to abandon his pursuit of the truth in all matters. Refusing to accept exile from Athens or a commitment to silence as his penalty, he maintains that public discussion of the great issues of life and virtue is a necessary part of any valuable human life. "The unexamined life is not worth living." (Apology 38a) Socrates would rather die than give up philosophy, and the jury seems happy to grant him that wish." Socrates' conviction to stand by reason stands testimony to the beginning of scientific and rational thought in the history of humanity. Like other great minds before him, of his time and after him, he was concerned with the mental freedom to examine ideas and come to conclusions based on reason. Valuable human lives tend to concern themselves more with the ideas these humans generate and the work they accomplish as a result, or the ideas they support and assist. As a result, his statement that he'd die rather than give up philosophy, is probably one of the early steps in the direction of human intellectual, scientific and social progress. Here are a few insights from the web resource listed: "His persistent questioning of authorities and public figures was probably aimed not to humiliate but to discover truth with a view to the good life. 1. Socrates considered himself a gadfly annoying the state. 2. The "Socratic irony"--the profession of ignorance was probably sincere but exaggerated because of his presumptions.. 3. Socrates irreverent cross-examination of prominent persons aimed not to humiliate but to discover truth with a view to finding the good life." | |
