| Lily of the Valley is one of those flowers that attracts folklore, being alleged to belong to the fairies, to be a charm that is proof against witches' spells The lily of the valley flowers are small, they bloom at the end of spring. The Latin name for Lily-of-the-Valley is convallaria majalis, derives from the Latin convallis 'valley' and majalis 'May-flowering' . They can be found growing in woods as well as gardens .Plant the bulb in a full shade or partially shady place with plenty of moisture. Lily of the valley plants require a lot of watering . They spread easily and will fill up an area in just a few years. The use of the blossoms of the lily of the valley was recommended by many traditional herbalists as far back as the 16th century, the flowers would be steeped in hot water as a remedy to being ease from the symptoms of gout and added to wine as it was believed to strengthen the memory Lily of the Valley flowers are said to have formed the bouquet of Elizabeth, Duchess of York (later the Queen Mother). Old folk tales claim that Lily of the valley protects your garden from evil spirits. The flowers are also used in perfumery. Yardley Parfumes, one of the oldest companies in the world, was originally established by the Cleaver family in 1770. Yardley became a major international company and presented with the first Royal Warrant in 1933 by Queen Mary. Lily of the Valley Perfume by Yardley is one of my favourites perfumes. | |
